What is DAMPPROOFING:

The damp contamination of plaster is often due to either Rising damp which is the upward movement of subsoil moisture in a wall or the Lateral movement of moisture up against or under a structure, no Damp Course in a wall or the incorrect placing of a damp course in a wall or simply Water Seapage into a wall due to the lack of waterproofing of exterior flat surfaces& or porous substrate.

As moisture movement in plaster takes place by Cappiliary action the often “over the counter” topical applications are of no value in solving damp issues.

As each dampproofing issue is unique and there is no “one cure for all” only an on-site inspection by an experienced consultant and educated assessment of a particular damp issue is of value to determine the exact course and procedure to follow in solving each problem.

DAMPPROOFING PROCEDURES:

TANKING: DAMPPROOFING OF PLASTER

The most frequently recommended procedure for the treatment of Rising Damp” and water damaged plaster to brick and mortar structures of today.

This process in short involves the stripping of the affected plaster off the walls back to bare brick to required heights. The exposed bricks are then Permanently sealed with special dampproofing slurries prior to the re-plastering of the areas with a strong plaster mix where only superior structural grade cement is used to which special dampproofing additives are added to form a Hydrophobic plaster layer, thus Permanently preventing the movement of moisture in the walls of a structure.

Unique to the Damp Seal S.A. Tanking procedure is the application of a cement/Polymer top coat to further seal the new plaster in preparation for painting.

In this process the heights up to which the plaster is stripped, the materials and additives used and ultimately the experience of the performing contractor will determine the longevity and success of the procedure.
